Google Play Store to make it easier for users to find the right app based on their device’s form factor

Vishal, July 20, 2023August 10, 2023

Android, known for its versatility as an operating system, is available on various devices including smartwatches, TV, tablets, foldables, laptops, and phones. The Play Store serves as the official source for apps and games on all these devices. However, not all apps available on the Play Store are suitable for every screen type. For example, an app may perform well on phones but may not be optimized for tablets or TVs.

To improve the app-finding experience, Google is planning to introduce new filters in the Play Store. This development was spotted by @AssembleDebug on Twitter, who noticed that Google Play has begun testing a new row of filters for the app installation screen listing.

These new filters will allow users to select a specific form factor, such as TV, Phone, Watch, or Tablet, to filter out apps that are suitable for that particular device. When a filter is selected, the listing will be adjusted accordingly. Additionally, reviews and ratings will be specific to that chosen form factor. This feature will make it easier for users to find the most appropriate apps for their devices.

According to the tipster, this change is part of Google’s recent addition called “Install on other devices,” which enables users to install apps on different devices linked to the same Google account.

This entire testing and addition seem to be part of Google’s ongoing beta program, where users can choose a form factor for their reviews and post them on the Play Store. Google has also recently included a dedicated filter at the top of the page to help users filter apps based on the device they are using.

With this latest development, Google aims to simplify the process of checking an app’s compatibility with users’ devices.
